Product Name:
Purslane (Portulaca oleracea)
Description:
Purslane is a half-hardy annual plant known for its succulent, leafy shoots. This versatile plant is entirely edible, with young, tender tips perfect for salads and more mature shoots suitable for cooking as a spinach alternative. Originating in Asia, purslane has made its way into various cuisines, including Lebanese, Mexican, and Bangladeshi. In Europe, a wild edible variety of purslane can also be found.
Growing Season:
February, March, April, May
Follow these steps for success:
1. Sow 3 or 4 seeds, about 3-4mm deep, in each cell of a modular tray filled with compost.
2. Wait until the seedlings emerge, typically 3-4 days, and then thin them to leave one seedling per cell.
3. Once the seedlings’ roots fill the cells, transplant them into your garden, spacing them 15cm apart in all directions.
4. Harvest the top part of the main stem when it reaches 15-20cm in height, leaving a stump with 2 pairs of leaves.
5. After the main stem is harvested, you’ll notice branches at the base of the leaves elongating. Harvest these when they reach 10-15cm in length, leaving a stump with a single pair of leaves.
6. Repeat this harvesting process 2 or 3 times to maximize your yield.
Enjoy growing and harvesting your purslane!
