Growing Instructions for Hollyhocks Single Petal from Seeds:
Planting Time:
Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
Outdoors: Direct sow in spring after the last frost or in late summer/early fall for blooms the following year.
Location:
Choose a site with full sun and well-draining soil.
Hollyhocks thrive best against walls or fences for support, as their tall stalks can be vulnerable to wind.
Soil Preparation:
Prepare soil by mixing in compost or organic matter to enrich the soil and improve drainage.
Aim for slightly alkaline to neutral pH (6.0–8.0).
Seed Sowing:
Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press them lightly into the soil (do not bury deeply, as they need light to germinate).
Space seeds about 12-18 inches apart to allow for air circulation, reducing the risk of rust disease.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until seeds germinate (7-14 days).
Once established, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Care & Maintenance:
1. Thinning & Staking:
Thin seedlings to the strongest plants, leaving adequate space.
Stake plants as they grow taller to prevent bending or breaking.
2. Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.
3. Disease Prevention:
Remove and destroy any leaves affected by rust, a common hollyhock issue. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
4. Deadheading:
Remove spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming. Allow some seed heads to remain if you wish to collect seeds or allow self-seeding.
Bloom Period:
Hollyhocks bloom from mid-summer to early fall in their second year. For perennial varieties, expect blooms annually.
Winter Care:
Cut back plants after the first frost if desired. Mulch lightly in colder climates to protect roots.
With their vibrant colors and majestic height, Single Petal Hollyhocks are a stunning addition to any garden, blending beauty and simplicity seamlessly.
