Growing Instructions:
1. Sowing Season:
In Pakistan, the best time to plant Amaryllis bulbs is in the fall (October to November) so they can bloom in winter.
2. Soil Preparation:
Use well-draining soil with a mix of loam, sand, and organic compost. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is ideal.
Ensure the soil is loose and aerated to allow proper root development.
3. Planting Bulbs:
Choose healthy, firm bulbs free from mold or soft spots.
Plant the bulb with its pointed end facing up, burying it halfway into the soil. The top third of the bulb should be above the soil surface.
Space multiple bulbs 8-12 inches apart to allow for growth.
4. Watering:
Water sparingly after planting until growth starts. Once the stem and leaves begin to appear, increase watering.
Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can cause bulb rot.
5. Light Requirements:
Place the pot in a location with bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
After the plant starts growing, move it to a sunnier spot to encourage flower development.
6. Temperature:
Amaryllis lilies prefer temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F) during the growing season.
Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
7. Fertilization:
Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the active growth period.
Stop fertilizing once the flowering season is over and the plant enters dormancy.
8. Post-Bloom Care:
After the flowers fade, cut the flower stalks back to the top of the bulb, but leave the leaves to continue growing.
Continue to water and fertilize the plant until the leaves turn yellow and die back, signaling the start of dormancy.
9. Dormancy:
Allow the plant to rest for 8-10 weeks in a cool, dry place with minimal watering.
After the dormancy period, repot the bulb with fresh soil and resume regular care to encourage new growth and blooming.
10. Pest and Disease Control:
Inspect the plant regularly for pests such as spider mites and aphids. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Avoid overwatering to prevent fungal diseases like bulb rot.
By following these instructions, you can enjoy the vibrant and showy blooms of Amaryllis lilies in your garden or home, adding a touch of elegance and color to your winter season.
